Carey advised Lincoln
on creating public money, Greenbacks, rather than take loans from private
banks. He helped prevent the destruction of Greenbacks by the National Banking
Act and its subsequent modifications (which were presented as monetary
“reforms”) by banks but with the intent of eliminating Greenbacks.
